Electrical troubleshooting & fault finding

A power cut, a tripping breaker, a dead socket or abnormal heating: an electrical fault can have many causes. KHOMELEC carries out methodical fault finding to identify the source of the problem, make the installation safe and carry out the appropriate repair where possible.

What kinds of faults do we handle?

  • Total or partial power loss in the installation
  • Circuit breaker that trips regularly
  • Residual-current device (RCD) that trips
  • Short circuit
  • Insulation fault
  • Socket or circuit with no power
  • Lighting or electrical equipment not working
  • Abnormal heating of a socket, cable or appliance
  • Burning smell or signs of overheating
  • Damaged electrical cable
  • Fault finding on an existing installation

A methodical approach to fault finding

An electrical fault shouldn’t be tackled by guesswork. We work through successive checks, measurements and tests to locate the source of the fault before carrying out any repair.

  1. Analysis of the problem reported by the customer
  2. Visual inspection of the installation concerned
  3. Electrical checks and measurements
  4. Locating the fault
  5. Identifying the cause where possible
  6. Repair or replacement of the faulty component
  7. Checking everything works after the intervention

Some signs call for prompt attention

An electrical installation showing abnormal signs should be checked promptly.

  • Burning smell
  • Socket or switch getting hot
  • Abnormally warm cable
  • Crackling or electrical noises
  • Black marks or scorching
  • Repeated tripping
  • Unexplained loss of power in part of the installation

In the event of smoke, a fire starting or immediate danger, switch off the power if it can be done safely and call the emergency services.

What if the fault can’t be repaired straight away?

Some faults require specific equipment, special access or additional work. When a permanent repair can’t be carried out straight away, the first aim is to make the affected installation safe and clearly explain the work needed next.
